Come & Eat Folly
Come & Eat Folly
The moving, colorful folly adds a cheerful addition to Kometenplein (literally: Comets-Square, but also: ComeEatSquare), next to Hoofddorp railway station. It anchors outdoor gatherings. Food trucks pull up, people meet for drinks after work, and small events take shape around the 10-meter-high object.
Hoofddorp railway station borders the Beukenhorst-West Business Park. The area sits exactly between the station and the village center. Until recently, it was a pragmatic business park: office buildings and parking lots. Dull and grey.
Hyde Park will transform the district. MVRDV drew up the masterplan for nearly 4,000 homes, and Dijk&co Landscape Architecture designed the public space. Architects including MVRDV, MVSA, Studio Ninedots, Barcode, and Team V now deliver the housing. The former desolate business park is turning into Hoofddorp’s new gateway.
Even before Hyde Park is completed, restaurant Kastan and the folly already make the station area a pleasant place to linger.
The triangular pavilion consists of four segments. Two segments can move vertically and swap positions. The pavilion opens and closes through this movement. When closed, the door and serving hatch are located 6 meters above ground level; after the switch, they open directly onto the square.
Helldorfer shipyard prefabricated the folly in parts. After Hyde Park is complete, the pavilion can move to a new site and take on a new role. The striping, combined with the triangular form, means each side is different. The lines work like dazzle paint: every viewpoint creates a new image.
